# Account Verification

**Before you can send emails** to your audience through Customer.io, your account must be verified. We automatically verify accounts when you sign up to filter out bad actors that might try to abuse our services.

## How verification works[](#how-verification-works)

We automatically verify your account when you sign up with Customer.io. We review your company website, domain, and use case to make sure we can support your messaging needs while maintaining our high deliverability standards. The result of this process is that you get great deliverability and peace of mind, while we maintain our standard of high quality and integrity as an email service provider.

Most accounts are approved automatically. If we need more information, our team will reach out to you directly. We may ask about:

* Your **company website**, to make sure we can accommodate your use case per our [acceptable use policy](https://customer.io/legal/acceptable-use-policy/).
* The **process people take to subscribe** to your messaging, to ensure your audience has opted in.
* An **example of a message** you intend to send through Customer.io, such as a screenshot or draft.

Once your account is verified, you’re all set to send! You’ll still need to [authenticate your sending domain](/journeys/channels/email/deliverability/authentication/) before you can deliver emails.

 Emails send to your test delivery address before you’re verified

You can activate a campaign or send a broadcast, but emails will send to your [test delivery address](/accounts/workspaces/overview/#message-sending), not your audience, before your account is verified. All other message types will send normally.

### What can I do before my account is verified?[](#testing-prior-to-verification)

While you can’t send email to your audience before your account is verified, you can:

* Send SMS, in-app messages, push notifications, and Slack messages
* Add [people](/journeys/people/manage/identifying-people/) to your account and update their profile [attributesA key-value pair that you associate with a person or an object—like a person’s name, the date they were created in your workspace, or a company’s billing date etc. Use attributes to target people and personalize messages.](/journeys/people/manage/attributes/) [using our API](/api/track/)
* Create [segments](/journeys/segmentation/segments/) to group your users
*   Create [campaigns](/journeys/send/campaigns/overview/)
    *   [Craft emails](/journeys/channels/email/2-email-basics/)
    * Add [delays and time windows](/journeys/send/workflows/builder/) to your campaign workflows

* Customize your own email [layouts](/journeys/channels/email/layouts/customizing-layout-starters/)
*   Create a [newsletter](/journeys/send/broadcasts/newsletters/) - a one-time broadcast to a group of people
* Pass [eventsSomething that a person in your workspace did. Events can trigger campaigns, add people to segments, etc, and you can use properties from events to personalize messages.](/journeys/people/events/) into your account [using our API](/api/track/)
* Install our [JavaScript snippet](/get-started/integrate/#integrate-with-customerio) to start logging PageViews for your signed in users

### How long does it take?[](#how-long-does-it-take)

Most accounts are verified automatically when you sign up. If your account requires additional review, we’ll respond to you as quickly as possible.

### What happens if I’m not automatically approved?[](#what-happens-if-im-not-automatically-approved)

Not to worry - this just means that we need more information to verify that you are who you say you are! We’ll reach out directly from `win@customer.io` with the subject **Action required to verify your Customer.io account** and request a few additional pieces of information so we can move forward with approval.
